Science with a purpose
The Centre for Marine Pollution Monitoring and Seafood Safety (CEMPOS) is domiciled at the University of Port Harcourt. Established in April 2009, the Centre began by implementing International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation projects focused on marine pollution monitoring.
Today, CEMPOS brings together research scientists, associates, and technologists to address environmental and societal challenges through research-based solutions. Our work supports the conservation, protection, and management of aquatic resources.
A place to learn, discover, and collaborate
The Centre operates two dedicated laboratories equipped with analytical and field-sampling instrumentation. Through IAEA-supported projects, scientists have trained at institutions in Egypt, Spain, Germany, Monaco, Morocco, Austria, and Tunisia.
We work with universities, government agencies, businesses, and non-governmental organisations to connect regional needs with international expertise.
Our four pillars
- Research and technology application: nuclear and related techniques, digital tools, and smart technologies applied to food, agriculture, the environment, and the blue economy.
- Sustainability and environmental solutions: waste-to-wealth projects, recycling and upcycling, and nature-based product development.
- Community and infrastructure development: demonstration farms, living laboratories, therapeutic gardens, and resilient communities.
- Strategic partnerships: collaboration with local and international experts, organisations, and agencies.
